Eye Photographer
Many people think great photographs come from your eyes, I believe they come from your heart. I have a good eye for composition, texture and colour, but really I'd rather photograph what I feel than what I see. No matter what the art form, whether it's music or dance or painting or film, what stirs my soul and burns itself deeply into my memory are the things that move me, that make me feel the deepest.
It makes sense even on a scientific level since everything is energy anyways. When I look at my work or the work of others I always try to feel the energy of the piece and if I'm not feeling it I'm not impressed.
I want a photo to rock me like a Queen song or traumatized me like "12 years a slave" or make me laugh like Chris Rock does.
I photograph the things that make me feel, I think all committed artists do this. The people who only photograph football games tend to love football. War correspondents have to have a passionate conviction for witnessing and reporting on the worse human experiences and be willing to risk their lives to do so.
I love nudity and sex. I'm no war correspondent but I have endured quite a bit of punishment for choosing that subject matter.
I photograph the people who make me feel. The most important attribute I look for in a model is their energy. I don't care how beautiful your face or body may be if you have ugly or dead energy I'll run from you like a wild fire.
I remember how blown away I was when I saw my first Van Gogh painting in real life. More than a century after his death I could feel his passion and obsession in that painting- his lust for life. I hope before I die to create some art work that will have the potential to blow you away.
Can you feel me?- ricardo scipio 2014
